2017
Auckland, New Zealand

As part of a $121 million restoration and expansion project at the Auckland Art Gallery, over 2000m² of solid American white oak flooring was installed. Because of the nature of art galleries and exhibition centres, the installation of the timber flooring not only required an appropriate adhesive system, but one which would also provide excellent noise-reduction.

Project Requirements

An acoustic rated timber floor bonding system to reduce transmission of foot fall noise to the ground floor level.
Additional requirements were:

  • Ability to be installed over existing timber and concrete
  • Light-weight to help meet weight restrictions
  • In conjunction with a supporting layer of structural grade plywood over the top, the timber floor build up needed to fall within a strict height limit
  • To offer a stable base to help mitigate expected movement over time

Challenges

  • The noise levels from footsteps on the wooden flooring had to be minimal, both in the exhibition rooms and also, because it is a multi-level building, for patrons on any floors below as well.
  • As the floors are in high traffic areas, they had to be especially durable.
  • Where necessary, the wood needed to be installed over existing timber and concrete surfaces, or over a supporting layer of structural grade plywood.
  • The installed flooring also needed to fall within strict height limits to ensure display spaces were not compromised
