Auckland, New Zealand

The first section of Auckland’s SH1 motorway system was opened in the 1950’s, between Ellerslie and Mt Wellington highway. The motorway has more than 90 bridges with the Penrose Road overbridge sitting at 4.57m above the motorway making, it one of the shortest bridges on SH1. Age, wear and state of the joints meant they were well due for refurbishment.

Project Requirements

NZTA required all damaged joints to be upgraded on the Penrose Road overbridge after many years of heavy traffic use. Sika supplied Emseal, a heavy-duty seismic joint system ideal for use on bridges for a durable and watertight expansion joint.

Challenges

The new bridge expansion joint system needed to be a long-term solution with excellent durability and quick install to reduce down time (closing of bridge). The Penrose over-bridge was closed from 10pm till morning to complete the installation before commuters started their day.

Sika Solution

Sika Emseal bridge expansion joint system is ideal for replacing old or failed bridge joints. The Product is designed to handle harsh environmental conditions, provide a trafficable, durable solution, and a fast and easy install with a driveable surface within an hour of installation.
