Fonterra, Whareora

Sika has been involved with the re-roofing of Fonterra buildings in Taranaki since 2015. Projects have been completed on a significant number of roofs at Fonterra’s Eltham, Kapuni and Whereroa sites. The region presents a demanding roofing environment being both coastal and at the foot of Mt Taranaki. As a whole milk processor, the weather tightness of Fonterra’s buildings is absolutely critical to its manufacturing processes and business.

Sika has been trusted to provide innovative and adaptable solutions to suit various types of roof structures in demanding industrial environments. These have included existing trough section metal roofs, insulated panel and plywood roofs. Both liquid and sheet applied systems have been utilised to provide practical, robust solutions.

Project Requirements

The recent refurbishment of Fonterra Whareroa’s WPC Drier building included re-cladding and re-roofing. Some concrete repair work and joint sealing was required to the interior. The existing three-level roof consisted of a plywood roof deck and liquid applied membrane. A new roof membrane was needed to complete the exterior refurbishment.

Challenges

  • Site testing was undertaken to confirm sound adhesion to the old membrane was possible. Adhering to the existing membrane provided a critical advantage, ensuring no structural changes were required and the building remained weather tight and hygienic during the entire project
  • Sarnafil lap joints are welded using hot air, reducing project risk and improving performance, with no reliance on adhesives and no naked flame torching
  • Sika worked closely with the architect to confirm membrane perimeter details that allowed for the sequencing of other trades and the removal of scaffolding as soon as possible
