Sika® Bonding Primer
Water-based epoxy resin primer
Sika® Bonding Primer is a 2-part, water-based multipurpose epoxy resin primer. It consolidates substrates and improves the adhesion of Sikalastic®, Sikafloor® and Sikagard® products.
- Fast curing increases productivity and saves time
- Consolidates dusty or friable substrates providing enhanced adhesion
- Reduces the risk of outgassing from susceptible substrates
- Overcoating possible after 1–2 hours
- Water-based
- Good penetrating ability into porous substrates
- Reduces the absorbency of the substrate
- Easy application
- Applied by brush, roller or airless spray
Usage
Multipurpose primer for:- Sikalastic® roofing systems
- Sikafloor® balcony waterproofing systems
- Sikagard® hygiene coatings
- Sika Carrier Membrane
- Bitumen sheet membranes
- Modified bituminous membranes
- Concrete and other cementitous substrates
- Glazed and unglazed ceramic tiles

Product Details
Chemical Base
Water-based epoxy with a polyamine curing mechanism
Shelf Life
24 months from date of production
Storage Conditions
The Product must be stored in original, unopened and undamaged packaging in dry conditions at temperatures between +5 °C and +25 °C. Always refer to packaging.
Density
~1.03 kg/l (+23 °C)
Application
Mixing Ratio
Part A:Part B = 4:1 (by volume)
Ambient Air Temperature
+5 °C min. / +40 °C max.
Relative Air Humidity
80 % max.
Dew Point
Beware of condensation. The substrate and uncured applied coating must be ≥ +3 °C above dew point.
Substrate Temperature
+5 °C min. / +40 °C max.
Substrate Moisture Content
The Product can be applied on substrates with a moisture content of ≤ 6 %.
The substrate must be visibly dry with no standing water.
The following test methods can be used to determine the substrate moisture content:
Sika®-Tramex meter
CM-measurement
Oven-dry-method
Waiting Time / Overcoating
Before applying Sikalastic® or Sikafloor® products on Sika® Bonding Primer, allow:
Substrate temperature | Minimum | Maximum |
+10 °C | 4 hours | 7 days |
+20 °C | 2,5–3,5 hours | 7 days |
+30 °C | 1 hour | 7 days |
Before applying Sikagard® products on Sika® Bonding Primer allow:
Substrate temperature | Minimum | Maximum |
+10 °C | 24 hours | 7 days |
+20 °C | 8 hours | 7 days |
+30 °C | 6 hours | 7 days |
Times are approximate and will be affected by film thickness and changing ambient conditions, particularly temperature and relative humidity.
Consumption
~0.15 kg/m2/coat. Apply in 1 or 2 coats.
This figure is theoretical and does not allow for any additional material due to surface porosity, surface profile, variations in level, wastage or any other variations. Apply product to a test area to calculate the exact consumption for the specific substrate conditions and proposed application equipment.
SUBSTRATE PREPARATION
IMPORTANT
Reference must be made to the Sika Method Statement: Sika® Bonding Primer
General
-
Substrates must be free of standing water (no puddles), clean and free of all contaminants such as dirt, oil, grease, coatings, laitance, surface treatments and loose friable material.
-
New concrete must be cured for at least 10 days.
-
Prepare substrates using grinding equipment, high pressure power washers, manual or mechanical wire brushes.
-
Damaged, weak or loose substrates must be removed and repaired with compatible materials.
-
To confirm adequate surface preparation and Product adhesion, carry out a small trial before full application together with adhesion tests as required.
MIXING
IMPORTANT
Over mixing must be avoided to minimise air entrainment.
Note:Use an electric single or double paddle mixer (300–400 rpm) with a spiral paddle for mixing.
Note:Mix full units only.
Mechanical mixing
Add Part B to Part A and mix Part A+B continuously for a minimum 3.0 minutes
Manual mixing
Add Part B to Part A and mix Part A+B continuously for a minimum 3.0 minutes using a spatula or flat mixing stick.
APPLICATION
Strictly follow installation procedures as defined in method statements, application manuals and working instructions which must always be adjusted to the actual site conditions.
Fleeced roller / brush application
Confirm product application conditions: substrate moisture content, substrate, air and product temperatures, relative humidity and dew point (Refer to Application Information).
Pour the mixed Product onto the surface.
Apply the Product evenly over the surface with a short-piled roller or brush. The consumption is specified in the Application Information.
Back roll the surface in two directions at right angles with a short-piled roller.
The primer must be continuous and pore free.
Airless spray application
Confirm product application conditions: substrate moisture content, substrate, air and product temperatures, relative humidity and dew point (Refer to Application information).
Spray apply the product in a continuous cross-spray operation and at a speed to achieve a consistent thickness and the required surface finish. The consumption is specified in the Application Information.
The primer must be continuous and pore free.
CLEANING OF TOOLS
Clean all tools and application equipment with water immediately after use. Hardened material can only be removed mechanically.
