2023
Auckland, New Zealand

Kelly Tarlton’s is New Zealand first and largest marine park in Auckland. With so many cool exhibits to look at, the new sea cave adventure exhibition was inspired by the sea life of New Zealand and is now home to the long fin eel and NZ’s packhorse lobster.

Project Requirements

Kelly Tarlton’s required a waterproof coating that would bond to steel, concrete and epoxy, have anti-corrosion properties and must be suitable for marine life exposure.

Challenges

  • Kelly Tatlton’s had to remain opened to the public during construction – minimum disruption
  • Kelly Tarlton’s Aquarium, Craig Thorburn Consulting Zoologist Ltd and Thorburn Consulting Engineers required products that were safe to use in a marine environment

Sika Solution

Sikagard-62 is a two-part, high build epoxy based protective coating. Its properties act as a chemical resistant protective layer to concrete, stone and cementitious mortars and renderings, epoxy cement, epoxy resin-based products and steel.

Having good mechanical and chemical resistance and being an easy to apply solution with potable water certification, it was the ideal solution for the lining of the exhibit.
