1. Tiling with Large-Format Ceramic

Large format ceramic and natural stone tiles create a clean, seamless and contemporary finish, but their size can make correct installation more demanding. Achieving a durable, long-lasting result requires careful substrate preparation and a complete tile installation system designed to accommodate movement and provide reliable adhesion.

Sika tile installation systems provide solutions for every stage of large format tile installation. Levelling products help create a smooth, even substrate, while high-performance polymer-modified tile adhesives provide strong, consistent bonding. For large format tiles, a double-spread application method helps achieve the adhesive coverage required for a secure installation.

To complete the system, flexible, water-repellent tile grouts with mould protection provide a durable finish between tiles, while high-performance elastic sealants are used in movement and perimeter joints to accommodate movement and help maintain the integrity of the tiled surface over time.

2. Tiling with Porcelain Stoneware

Porcelain tiles are ceramic tiles manufactured under high pressure and at high temperatures, making them extremely hard, dense and low in water absorption. These properties make porcelain tiles a durable choice for areas where performance and reliability are important.

Because porcelain tiles are non-absorbent, they require a tile installation system that provides strong adhesion and can withstand high stresses. Sika tile installation systems combine suitable substrate preparation with polymer-modified tile adhesives designed for bonding dense, low-absorption materials such as porcelain stoneware.

The system is finished with flexible tile grout offering good mechanical strength and abrasion resistance, along with high-performance elastic sealants for movement, isolation and connection joints.

3. Tiling on Drywall in Dry Areas

Drywall is widely used for walls and ceilings in commercial and residential buildings, including healthcare, hospitality, education and multi-residential developments.

Sika tile installation systems provide a complete solution for tiling on drywall in dry areas. A suitable primer is applied first to support adhesion, followed by a polymer-modified cementitious tile adhesive for wall and floor applications.

The system is completed with flexible tile grout offering good mechanical strength and abrasion resistance, together with a high-performance antifungal elastic sealant for movement and connection joints.

4. Tiling in Wet Rooms

Wet areas such as bathrooms, showers, kitchens and laundries require a reliable waterproofing and tile installation system to prevent water ingress, moisture damage and mould growth within the building structure.

Sika provides complete wet area waterproofing and tiling systems for residential and commercial applications. The system combines primers, waterproofing membranes, tapes and flexible tile adhesives to create a secure, waterproof base for tiling in bathrooms, showers and other wet areas. These components are designed to manage moisture and movement while providing strong adhesion to tiled surfaces.

The system is completed with durable, water-resistant tile grout and high-performance antifungal sealants for movement, perimeter and connection joints. Together, these components help create a waterproof, hygienic and long-lasting tiled finish for residential and commercial wet areas.

5. Tiling with Marble, Granite & Other Natural Stone

Natural stone tiles such as marble and granite provide a durable, high-quality finish for both residential and commercial spaces. Because natural stone can be sensitive to moisture, correct substrate preparation and the right tile installation system are important for a long-lasting result.

Sika natural stone tile installation systems combine high-strength, low-shrinkage screeds with rapid hardening properties, allowing tile installation after just 24 – 48 hours. Fast-setting, polymer-modified cementitious tile adhesives provide reliable bonding while helping minimise stress transfer to marble, granite and other natural stone tiles.

The system is completed with high-strength, abrasion-resistant grout and a permanently elastic, non-staining sealant for movement and connection joints, helping protect the appearance and performance of the finished tiled surface.

6. Tiling on New or Renovated Balconies

Tiling for New Balcony Construction

Tiled balconies require careful preparation, waterproofing and drainage to prevent issues such as water ingress, uneven surfaces and failed perimeter detailing.

Sika balcony tiling systems start with a flexible, fibre-reinforced waterproofing layer that can be applied just 24 – 48 hours after the floor screed is laid. A fast-setting, polymer-modified tile adhesive is then used to provide reliable bonding on exposed balconies subject to changing temperatures and weather conditions.

The system is completed with flexible, abrasion-resistant tile grout and a high-performance elastic sealant for movement and connection joints, helping maintain a durable and watertight tiled balcony.

Tiling for Balcony Renovation

Water ingress through tiled balconies and terraces is a common cause of building damage and deterioration. Sika provides waterproofing and tile installation solutions for the repair and refurbishment of existing exterior tiled areas.

After loose tiles and grout are removed and the surface is cleaned, repair mortars can be used to fill voids and restore levels. A 2-in-1 waterproofing and tile adhesive system can then provide waterproofing and tile bonding in a single application, helping reduce installation time and overall refurbishment costs.

The system is completed with flexible, abrasion-resistant tile grout and a high-performance elastic sealant for movement and connection joints, helping create a durable, weather-resistant finish.

7. Tiling on Facades

External facade tiling is exposed to harsh weather, rapid temperature changes and movement between different building materials, making a flexible and durable tile installation system essential for long-term performance.

Sika facade tiling systems provide a complete solution for external tile installation, from substrate preparation through to the finished facade. High-performance, polymer-modified tile adhesives provide strong adhesion while helping accommodate thermal movement caused by wide and rapid temperature variations. Flexible tile grouts offer good mechanical strength and abrasion resistance, helping the tiled surface withstand demanding exterior conditions.

Movement joints and perimeter connections are completed with high-performance elastic sealants designed to accommodate movement while maintaining a clean, professional finish. Together, these components create a secure, weather-resistant and durable tiled facade system built to withstand New Zealand’s climate—all while staying accessible to both DIYers and tradespeople.

8. Tiling in and around Swimming Pools

Swimming pool tiling requires a complete waterproofing and tile installation system that can withstand continuous water immersion, thermal changes and demanding pool conditions, including chlorinated and saltwater swimming pools.

Sika swimming pool tiling and pool waterproofing systems provide a complete solution from substrate preparation through to waterproofing, tile installation, grouting and joint sealing. Cementitious repair and levelling mortars are used to create a smooth, sound substrate, followed by a flexible, fibre-reinforced waterproofing mortar for durable, long-term waterproofing.

Flexible cement-based tile adhesives provide strong adhesion while helping withstand thermal changes and continuous immersion. High-performance epoxy grout provides excellent mechanical and chemical resistance and is suitable for demanding swimming pool applications, including saltwater pools.

The system is completed with a high-quality, flexible, neutral-curing silicone joint sealant designed for swimming pools and permanently wet areas. It provides resistance to chlorinated water and common swimming pool chemicals while sealing movement and connection joints, helping create a watertight, durable and long-lasting tiled swimming pool installation.
