Sikasil® NG

Specialist grade silicone sealant with superior mould resistance and unique adhesion to bathroom acrylic plastics

Sikasil® NG is a neutral cure, silicone sealant which provides a permanent watertight seal to various substrates including acrylic plastics, ceramics, and some powder coated surfaces. Sikasil® NG exceeds the 15 year minimum requirements of the durability provisions of the New Zealand Building Regulations 1992 Clause B2 providing:

  • It is used in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations’.
  • It is used with the design parameters stated in this data sheet.
  • It is used in conjunction with other approved building systems and materials.

Usage

Sikasil® NG has been specifically formulated for use as a joint sealant between acrylic plastic shower, bath and basin units and adjacent building components. Sikasil® NG is also suitable for general purpose sealing to and between a wide range of plastics.

Application steps

SUBSTRATE PREPARATION

Joint surfaces must be clean, dry and free from frost. Remove all dirt, laitance, loose material, mould release and curing agents, and foreign matter. In all joints a bond breaker must be used to prevent sealant contact with the back of the joint, and hence allow optimum performance. In shallow joints self-adhesive polyethylene tape can be used. Deep joints should incorporate a backing strip such as Sika PEF Rod to support the sealant while also acting as a bond breaker. For a neat finish mask the areas adjacent to the joint.

PRIMING: On most surfaces sealant adhesion will be improved by the use of a primer. In applications where adhesion is critical (e.g. high
movement joints) a primer is highly recommended. For glass, ceramics and mill finished aluminium no priming is required. For powder coated
aluminium, priming requirements will vary and an adhesion test will need to be carried out. For timber and other porous surfaces use Sika® Primer-3 N. Most plastics do not require a primer although an adhesion test is recommended prior to application.

CLEANING OF TOOLS

Clean tools immediately after use with Sika® Remover-208.
