As part of a wider building refurbishment programme, the Spencer on Byron Hotel swimming and spa pools were found to be in need of replacement. The swimming and adjacent spa pool sit atop a podium roof on level 5, overlooking the surrounding streets and suburb.

Project Requirements

Once the existing swimming and spa pool linings had been removed, it was found that extensive concrete repairs and waterproofing measures would be needed.

Repairs had to be of sufficient strength and suitability to meet the critical demands of the waterproofing application. Following these repairs, a new waterproofing layer was to be applied to the inside of the pools and surrounding podium prior to plaster and tile finishes.

Challenges

Not only was Sika responsible for the waterproofing membrane itself, but the underlying repairs and substrate had to accommodate the pressure and weight of a swimming pool full of water. For this reason, high-strength Sika MonoTop® repair mortars and Sikadur® epoxies were specified. Reinforcing mesh was used throughout the Sikalastic®-152 application for additional strength.

As the swimming pool and podium are fully exposed to the elements, the system also needed to handle variable weather, including sun and rain for the duration of its life.
